Mozilla Shuts Down Pocket: Bookmarking App to Cease Operations by July 8
Firefox developer Mozilla is discontinuing the operation of its bookmark and reading app Pocket. The application can no longer be downloaded and premium subscriptions are no longer offered, according to the Mozilla Foundation. The deadline on which the plug is to be pulled on Pocket is July 8. Until then, however, existing users can still use the service.
With Pocket, you can reformat web pages or articles for later reading, save them and synchronize them across multiple devices. It is also possible, for example, to assign the texts to different categories with keyword tags.
Data can be downloaded until October 8
Users have until October 8 to back up their data from the Pocket service. This works via an export tool that creates an HTML file with all saved links. This can take up to 24 hours. Once the file is ready, it is automatically sent as an e-mail.
According to Mozilla, it is not necessary to manually delete the data in the account or the account itself: Everything will be automatically deleted after October 8. Existing premium subscriptions will be automatically canceled. If it is an annual contract, there is a pro-rata refund.
Mozilla focuses on the Firefox browser
According to Mozilla, it wants to bundle its developer capacities in the Firefox browser in the future. This has received tab groups as a new feature and also offers improved bookmark management, for example. This should make it easier to manage reading lists directly in the browser.
Tabs that belong or should be related thematically or organizationally can now be combined into groups: Simply drag one tab to the other to create a group, or right-click on a tab and select the function from the context menu.
Tab groups get names and colors
To keep track of several tab groups, the groups can be named and color-coded. Additional tabs can be added to a group by right-clicking on the context menu.
A group can also be reopened later after closing the browser – unless it was created in private mode and the private window was closed.
