EA SPORTS™ WRC review

EA SPORTS™ AND Codemasters have released the first WRC game under the official WRC license. The anxious wait ended after the rights of the World Rally Championship (WRC) were transferred to Codemasters. Take a look at the new WRC game, which offers similar gameplay to the Dirt Rally series, with this review.

EA SPORTS™ WRC review

Rally games are seen as one of the important areas of competition in the gaming world. Although WRC does not have the same popularity as Formula 1, we can say that rally games shine when it comes to competitive games. Codemasters’ Dirt Rally series was one of them. While there is no new Dirt Rally game after EA Sports acquired Codemasters, we have an official WRC game instead with the WRC license being obtained.

We cannot ignore that Codemasters has an important history in racing games. He has given us Colin McRae Rally, TOCA Race Driver, Dirt, Dirt Rally or F1 legend in the past. EA Sports WRC is the culmination of a project that started in 2019. Following the success of Dirt Rally 2.0, Codemasters wanted to acquire the official WRC license and received it at the beginning of 2020. The developers chose to develop the game with Unreal Engine 4.

The game has various modes such as race, championship, multiplayer and time lap. EA Sports WRC doesn’t skimp on options and even offers a mode to customize your driver or build your car to WRC specifications with various parts. This option is interesting, but it may not be noticed if we take into account that the game includes 18 cars divided into 78 categories.

The car catalog is one of the most solid in rally games and we can take advantage of this in a personalized championship in speed games. You can start your career in the junior category on your quest to become a WRC champion. Events are divided into weeks and allow the user to participate in special events such as purchasing a car, hiring engineers, accessing demonstration races or official events.

EA Sports WRC’s career mode offers an accumulation of activity, not a sense of progression as a driver. In this section, WRC provides a better experience by separating the competition from other aspects of your team, such as improving the car or personnel. If you don’t hire engineers, the cost of damage or repair time is higher.

EA SPORTS™ WRC gameplay

In EA Sports WRC, Codemasters designed the experience to make it accessible for those playing with a controller. There’s no need to adjust sensitivity or enable assists before your first playthrough, as the game does this for you. EA Sports WRC is just as challenging as Dirt Rally 2.0, and not paying attention to co-driver prompts will cause a crash that could end the race or event.

The gameplay in EA Sports WRC is remarkable. Gravel control is precise and cars react according to engine configuration, braking power or weight management. If you have a steering wheel, the experience is infinitely better.

EA SPORTS WRC offers five support levels for ABS, traction control, stability control, throttle limiter and more. Depending on your experience with these games, you will be able to enable some of them and avoid disappointments.

For many fans, gameplay is more important than graphics. In this respect, EA Sports WRC does not disappoint at all, especially if you have a steering wheel. The freedom to set assistants or configure the controller to your needs ensures all users can enjoy it.

If you play the game on PC, you’ll not only get more options for adjusting the graphics (like DLSS), but also VR support and the ability to enjoy it with more steering wheels than on console.
